Overpacked and Under Plastic

Sustainable packing basics

Let’s get one thing straight: I’m not a minimalist packer. I bring what I need, and then some. I’d rather be prepared than panic-buy something in plastic that I already own. For me, packing isn’t about convenience, it’s about intention.

I’ve learned that bringing certain things with you, whether it's your own snacks, bags, or toiletries, can make a huge difference. Not just for the planet (hi, less waste!) but for your peace of mind too. Especially if you’re plant-based, picky about ingredients, or just not a fan of single-use plastic.

So here’s my travel essentials list, the one I run through before every trip to make sure I’m covered. I figured I’d share it with you, in case you also like your travel habits to reflect your lifestyle, without driving yourself nuts in the process.

Clothing

I like to pack with intention, using what I already have and reducing the need for new clothes. Here's how I keep my wardrobe sustainable while traveling:

  • Second-Hand Shopping: Instead of buying new outfits for each trip, I like to focus on finding new second-hand pieces. Thrift shopping is a great way to reduce waste, and you often find gems you wouldn’t find in a regular store. If you want more thrifting tips, check out my second-hand shopping blog.

  • Capsule Wardrobe: I build a capsule wardrobe for travel, with versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched easily. I focus on neutral tones like black, brown, and warm colors that complement each other, making it easy to create outfits without taking up too much space in my suitcase.

  • Statement Pieces: I recommend investing in smaller statement accessories like scarves and bags that can elevate your outfits without needing a whole new wardrobe for every trip. Plus, these pieces help to make your travel photos pop without requiring multiple new outfits.

  • Laundry sheets: No, that’s right, not drying sheets, but sheets that resolve in the water to create soapy water. It makes it easier for you to clean your clothes in the sink or tub when you run out on your trip. This way, you don’t have to pay those crazy hotel rates (I’ve made that mistake once before.) Also, I like to carry a stain stick for any travel mishaps. I’m still on the hunt for a greener alternative, so if you know of one, feel free to DM me!

  • Fabric laundry bag; to avoid taking the plastic ones from the hotel, I keep one of my laundry bags from home in my suitcase. It makes it easier to separate the clean from the dirty, and they are typically much bigger than the ones provided by hotels anyway.

Plant-Based Snacks

Traveling as a plant-based eater comes with its challenges, especially when in-flight meals are limited. That’s why I always pack my protein bars, ramen noodles, and vegetarian bouillon cubes for quick meals on the plane. I keep them in a silicone, watertight bag to avoid spills.

  • Honey: I always carry honey as a sweetener since it’s plant-based (unlike some sugars that are processed with bone char). It’s a great alternative to refined sugar.

  • Ginger Supplements: For those who suffer from nausea or motion sickness, ginger supplements are a lifesaver. I take them before and during the flight to keep any discomfort at bay.

Reusables

I always carry a few reusables to reduce my environmental impact:

  • Reusable Water Bottle: It’s crucial to have a water bottle with a filter when traveling, especially if you're going to places where the water quality might be questionable.

  • Collapsible Bags: I bring a bamboo foldable bag and a couple of net bags for any shopping I do. These are perfect for carrying lunch or souvenirs without relying on plastic bags.

Eco-Friendly Toiletries

This particular list ended up a bit longer than I had imagined… To dive further into what specifically I use when traveling, see my toiletries bag blog here

Hygiene Essentials

Hygiene is a top priority for me, and it’s important to stay clean and germ-free when you’re traveling to avoid getting sick when possible. Here’s how I stay fresh and clean:

  • Refillable Mini Hand Sanitizer: I carry a mini hand sanitizer that I refill again and again. It’s compact and essential for travel hygiene.

  • Electronic Alcohol Wipes: I use alcohol wipes to clean my phone, iPad, or any electronics I’m carrying on the regular. You’d be surprised how dirty those screens get while traveling!

  • Wipes: I always bring wipes to clean the plane seats and other surfaces like the remotes in the hotel rooms. I also like to bring plant-based bathroom wipes as a sustainable option.

Traveling sustainably isn’t about being perfect, it’s about being mindful of our choices and doing what we can to reduce waste. By focusing on reusables, supporting second-hand markets, and carrying eco-friendly toiletries, we can make a real difference. It’s all about being intentional with our travels, both for the planet and our own personal well-being. Remember: small changes can lead to big impacts.
