Tam Coc Garden

A Sustainable Sanctuary in the Heart of Vietnam

Hidden away in a tranquil valley surrounded by the stunning limestone karsts of northern Vietnam, Tam Coc Garden quickly became one of my favorite places to stay. Situated on flat land with waterways winding through it, this resort felt like a private retreat. The peaceful surroundings, combined with its focus on sustainability, created the perfect environment to relax and reflect. This was our last stop before heading back to our flight home, and it was a bittersweet ending to our time in Vietnam.

A Seamless Integration with Nature

The architecture at Tam Coc is a beautiful example of vernacular architecture, designed to blend into its surroundings while ensuring guests experience a peaceful escape. The buildings are compact, with one or two rooms each, keeping the spaces intimate and functional. The use of local materials, such as stone and wood, is evident, and they provide the resort with natural insulation, keeping the interiors cool during the day and warm at night, which is important given the humidity and temperature fluctuations of the area.

The terra cotta tile roofs are a standout feature, adding rustic beauty while maintaining the traditional aesthetic. I loved the simplicity of the design; the buildings don’t overwhelm the landscape, they sit harmoniously with the natural environment. The stone walls in the bathrooms were my favorite architectural detail. They gave the rooms a cool, cave-like feeling that was both calming and refreshing.

An Oasis of Greenery

The landscape design at Tam Coc plays an integral role in its overall atmosphere. The resort’s garden is the main source of circulation, connecting the rooms and offering guests a chance to walk through the lush greenery. The garden is a vibrant mix of edible plants and tropical flowers, carefully chosen to thrive in the local climate. These plants not only contribute to the beauty of the resort but also play a crucial role in sustainable farming practices. Much of the food served to guests is harvested directly from the gardens, ensuring freshness and minimizing the resort's carbon footprint.

Walking through the gardens felt like stepping into an oasis, each plant and tree carefully placed to create an experience of privacy and connection to nature. The layout of the garden was functional and beautiful, providing both aesthetic enjoyment and privacy between rooms.

Fresh, Local, and Flavorful

The food was another highlight of our stay. As a plant-based eater, I appreciated the abundance of fresh vegetables and fruits, and while Benjamin enjoys meat, he also had a fantastic experience. The food here was truly idealistic. Each dish was a delicate balance of flavors, every bite felt authentic and connected to the land.

We were spoiled with beautiful drinks that paired wonderfully with the dishes, and the presentation of each plate was just as impressive as the flavors. From delicate rice paper rolls to intricate soups, the meals were sustainable, flavorful, and reflective of both traditional and modern Vietnamese cuisine.

A Narrow Escape

While the resort itself was a dream, the boat tour we took through the caves nearby was a bit of a nightmare. Aside from the claustrophobic and cramped conditions due to the high water levels, the tour guide left us feeling more trapped than at ease. We had to negotiate with the guide about a larger tip, as they made it clear it was expected. We were, low-key kidnapped for a moment, and while it wasn’t aggressive, it definitely felt uncomfortable and forced. To avoid any confrontation, we obliged. We never expected to be put in that situation, and it cast a shadow over an otherwise peaceful experience.

Even though the boat tour was a bit of a … whatever that was, our overall experience at Tam Coc Garden was incredibly special. The sustainable architecture, local food, and eco-friendly practices make this place a shining example of how luxury and sustainability can coexist harmoniously. The resort's thoughtful approach to design, from its wooden beams and stone walls to the garden that provided much of our meals, created a space that felt connected to the environment in a meaningful way.

The small moments, like the lush gardens, the delicious food, and the restful spa treatments, left a lasting impression. It’s clear that Tam Coc Garden not only prioritizes its impact on the environment but also takes care of its guests with kindness, beauty, and authenticity.

For anyone visiting Vietnam, I highly recommend Tam Coc Garden for its sustainable approach to hospitality, its integration with nature, and its intimate, luxurious feel. It was an unforgettable part of our journey, and it stands as a shining example of how travel can be both beautiful and environmentally responsible.
