Traveling as a MOSTLY Plant-Based Person

Essential Tips for a Smooth Journey

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.Traveling as a plant-based person can be both rewarding and challenging. With a bit of preparation and flexibility, you can enjoy your trips without compromising your dietary choices. Here’s how to make your plant-based journey easier and more enjoyable:

  1. Prepare Key Phrases

Learn Basic Phrases: Before you travel, familiarize yourself with essential phrases like “Please,” “Thank you,” and “Is this vegan?” in the local language. Knowing how to ask if a dish contains animal products can be incredibly helpful. I have created a cheat sheet(link)  with the basics for 13 different languages. Download them prior to your visit for easy access!

Use Google Translate: Download Google Translate on your phone for instant translations. It can be a lifesaver when you’re navigating menus or communicating dietary needs in countries where English isn’t widely spoken.

Carry a Pocket Dictionary: For emergencies, keep a pocket dictionary in your suitcase. It’s a handy tool if you encounter language barriers, especially in places where digital services might be unreliable. See other packing tips for international trips here.

  2. Pack Wisely

Bring Protein Bars: Plant-based options can be limited in some areas, so having protein bars on hand ensures you have a nutritious snack available. Pack a variety of your favorite bars to suit different tastes and needs. Check out my favorite protein bars here.

Travel-Friendly Cooking Gear: If your accommodation has a kitchen, consider bringing essentials like a portable blender bottle or travel-sized condiments to prepare simple meals.

  3. Stay Flexible

  4. Communicate Your Needs: Don’t hesitate to ask restaurant staff if they can modify dishes to meet your plant-based diet. Many places are willing to accommodate special requests.

  5. Explore Local Markets: Local markets often have fresh fruits, vegetables, and other plant-based staples. They’re a great way to discover unique local products that fit your dietary needs.

  6. Be Prepared for Limited Options! Pack Extra Snacks: If plant-based options are limited, having extra snacks like protein bars can be a lifesaver. Bring a selection to cover various needs and preferences.

  7. Enjoy Plant-Based Treats

Seek Out Local Delights: While traveling, look for local plant-based treats and specialties. Many regions offer traditional dishes that can be veganized or are naturally plant-based.

  8. Find Vegan Bakeries: In some cities, vegan bakeries offer delicious plant-based pastries and sweets. Finding these spots can be a great way to indulge in guilt-free treats.

  9. Support Sustainable Practices

  10. Choose Eco-Friendly Options: Opt for restaurants and markets that emphasize sustainability, such as those using locally sourced ingredients or eco-friendly packaging.

  11. Reduce Waste: Bring reusable bags, utensils, and containers to minimize waste and support environmentally conscious practices.

Traveling as a plant-based person requires some extra planning, but with these tips, you can enjoy your trips while staying true to your dietary values. From learning key phrases to packing essential snacks, a little preparation makes a big difference in maintaining a plant-based lifestyle on the go. At the end of the day, remember you have to eat. Some diets are a bit more flexible than others and I will without a doubt have a full lactose-oozing cheesy pizza in Italy and milky chocolate in Switzerland when the time comes. Do the best you can but at the end of the day remember to do what's best for you, your stomach, and your health.

Go easy on yourself. Do the best you can. You’re doing GREAT!
