Blog Post: Travel Packing Guide: How I Pack Sustainably and Efficiently

Introduction

Traveling has always been a passion of mine, and over the years, I've honed my packing skills to a fine art. In the past, I would spend hours deliberating over what to bring, but now I've streamlined the process to pack quickly and efficiently. A key aspect of my packing philosophy is sustainability, and I always make sure to leave room for the treasures I find on my journeys, like plant-based treats, teas, architecture books, and ceramics. Here's a peek into my packing process and what I always make sure to include.

The Essentials: Sustainable Packing Basics

  1. Eco-Friendly Toiletries: To minimize plastic waste, I use bar soap and bar shampoo, along with a small glass bottle of hair oil. This setup is not only environmentally friendly but also reduces luggage weight.

  2. Second-Hand Clothing and Souvenirs: I buy most of my clothes second-hand, focusing on pieces in red, black, and white to mix and match easily. This approach supports sustainability and allows for versatile outfit combinations.

For more on what I pick out as souvenirs, see my blog post here.

  3. Plant-Based Snacks: Traveling as a plant-based eater can be challenging, especially with in-flight meals. I always pack protein bars and ramen noodles in a silicone watertight bag for a quick meal by simply adding hot water.

  4. Electronics and Comfort Items: I bring various electronics, including chargers, cables, and screen protection. To ensure a good night's sleep, I pack an eye mask and Bose ear plugs that play soothing sounds like rainstorms and ocean waves. My iPad mini, which fits perfectly into a hard container by Perrier Carden (a thrift find in Los Angeles), is essential for entertainment and work on the go.

  5. Makeup and Personal Care: I’ve been using the same makeup palettes for years, replacing mascara as needed and using the old tubes for eyebrow grooming. My makeup essentials include brown and black pencil eyeliners and lip gloss. I choose aluminum-free deodorant in cardboard containers and buy small sizes of my favorite perfumes, refilling them from full-size purchases from Dossier. Check out my favorite Dossier perfumes here.

  6. Hygiene Essentials: Being a bit of a germ freak, I always bring plenty of hand sanitizer and wipes to clean plane seats and other surfaces. I also carry plant-based bathroom wipes, which are available in my Amazon shop.

Carry-On vs. Checked Luggage

Carry-On Luggage:

  • Bags: I use one of my two Pelican cases and an overnight tote bag. The tote bag is great for carrying lighter souvenirs and essentials, such as an extra set of clothes for sleeping and changing, in case my luggage is delayed or lost.

  • Essentials: This includes my reusable water bottle with a filter, electronics, hygiene items, and a few snacks. For more about my in-flight essentials, see the list above.

Checked Luggage:

  • Important Documents: I keep a copy of my passport in my checked luggage as a precaution against theft or loss.

  • Clothing Care: A steamer for clothes ensures I can keep my outfits wrinkle-free, no matter the travel conditions.

  • Laundry: I bring dry laundry detergent sheets, which are convenient and save space.

  • Food: Power bars for quick energy on the go.

  • Shopping Bags: Extendable or net bags that fit into a purse are perfect for avoiding plastic bags while shopping.
