Skills Getting Lost in the Scroll?

Social Media Tips for Creatives

There is no denying that your social media presence can be a powerful tool for building your brand and showcasing your skills. But with so many accounts out there, how do you stand out? In this blog, I’m sharing a few tailored tips to help you elevate your social media game and build a distinctive brand identity. From integrating your unique skills to engaging your audience, these tips will help you connect with followers and make your mark online.

Speak to your different audiences

If you’ve got a mixed audience, clients, potential customers, past customers, people who want to hire you, people who want to be you, and even your competition, then congrats, you’ve got endless content potential. You need a little something for everyone to create a network. Not literally EVERYONE. Just everyone connected to your business. And not to worry, you don’t have to speak to them all at once. Some posts will be more tailored, but remember, you’re showing them what you can do and what you know. You’re creating content that bridges the gap between your customers, colleagues, and yes, even your competition. (Have you seen the Twitter wars between Wendy’s and McDonald's? Hilarious—and genius. They pull in attention from each other’s audience, and boom, your audience has expanded.)

Each group needs something a little different from you, and that’s a good thing. You’re not starting from scratch, you’re just switching up how you talk to each of them. One topic can turn into five posts depending on who it’s for and how you frame it. That’s how series are born, and that’s how you end up with a content calendar that basically writes itself. There are endless ways to showcase what you can do, and every perspective speaks to someone different. You might post before-and-after shots to attract a new client mid-renovation, or a quick breakdown of how you built a 3D model to inspire someone who wants to do what you do. (I will get into that more in a minute.) Either way, you’re building trust, growing your reach, and showing up like the expert you are.

Leverage Your Personal Style

Your biggest asset? You and your people. Putting a face to your brand is one of the easiest and most effective ways to build a connection. Get yourself, your team, your customers, and anyone with insight or personality on camera. It’s a great way to integrate your unique style into your content. And trust me, style is memorable. If someone can say, “Oh yeah, the woman with the cool glasses, she knows her sh*t,” then congrats, you’ve just made an impression that sticks. Even if they don’t remember your name or handle, they’ll remember you. And that makes it easier for them to tell people about you.

Style goes beyond fashion. It shows up in how you keep your home or studio, how you speak, and the vibe you give off. It signals a kind of visual intelligence, and when you use it intentionally, it opens up all kinds of creative opportunities. It also gives you a path to brand collaborations. If your look aligns with your work, or you’re using tools, products, or even accessories that support your process, talk about it! Kelly Wearstler does this beautifully; her personal style mirrors her design work, and you can tell it’s all intentional.

So go ahead and tag the company that made your ridiculously cute safety vest or the tool brand you’re currently obsessed with. That’s how doors open. You scratch their back (with a tag), they scratch yours (with a repost). Style, strategy, and reach, all in one move.

Educational Content with a Twist

Let’s get back to one of your most important target audiences. People who admire you and your brand. When creating posts, you have to think beyond just showing off your wonderful products and services. Your process is interesting and people are already spending time scrolling to level up their own skills, and knowledge. Allow them to look to you for guidance. Not every person on your page is a customer; some of them might be aspiring to be you one day, and that’s a powerful connection.

So, why gatekeep? We’ve all been there, struggling to figure things out on our own. But now, we can help make the path easier for the next generation. Share what you’ve learned along the way, the real stuff, don’t just talk about the victories, but also the roadblocks. Let your followers know what worked for you, and just as importantly, what didn’t.

Educating your audience isn’t just about teaching them how to do something; it’s about being open, giving them the tools to succeed, and showing them what to avoid. Yes, show them your mistakes, warn them about the tough stuff, but also, show them how to navigate those challenges. And, don’t forget to let them in on the fun parts too, the stuff that makes all the hard work worth it.

At the end of the day, your journey can be a roadmap for others, and your story can be the bridge that helps someone else get closer to where they want to be. So, get real, get vulnerable, and give them the lowdown on what it’s like to be you. The world doesn’t need another perfectly curated feed, it needs real talk and real value. Show your audience how you’ve leveled up, and help them do the same.

Behind-the-Scenes Stories

This builds on the education angle, but goes further. Where educational content teaches and guides, behind-the-scenes stories invite people into your world. Think of it as the difference between a tutorial and a diary. One shows people how to do something. The other shows them why it matters.

The goal here isn’t just to share what you know, it’s to show who you are. This kind of content gives your audience access to the reality behind the polished product or curated feed. It's the long nights, the messy desk, the shipping error, the spontaneous idea that actually worked, the one that didn't. It’s what makes you human, and humans are what people connect with.

These stories don’t need to be groundbreaking. Sometimes the smallest behind-the-scenes moment is the one that hits the hardest. Talk about what surprised you. What made you laugh when you should have cried? What you're figuring out as you go. Your audience isn’t just made up of future clients — it includes future collaborators, community members, and even friends. People want to see how the work gets made, not just the final result.

Behind-the-scenes content deepens trust, not because you're showing off your expertise, but because you're showing up as you. And in a sea of polished perfection, being real is what makes people stick around.

So yes — share your knowledge. But also share the mood swings, the duct-taped lightbox, the team lunch that turned into a brainstorm session. Show the work, and the weird. That's where the real connection happens.

Engage with Interactive Content

If you want to take your audience engagement to the next level, it’s time to get them involved! Interactive content like polls, quizzes, or Q&A sessions isn’t just a fun distraction for your followers, it’s a way to build a relationship and make them feel like they’re part of your creative process.

For example, post two different design options for a space and ask your followers to vote on their favorite. Or host a Q&A session where you answer burning questions about your design philosophy, what makes your work stand out, or how they can incorporate elements from your creations into their own homes. Get your followers to weigh in on decisions, let them help pick the color of your next painting or even choose what you should wear for an important meeting. It’s a small thing that makes a huge difference in creating that connection.

People love shows where they get to vote for the winner or pick their favorite contestant, right? That’s because it makes them feel like they’re making an impact. The same thing goes for your brand. Letting your audience weigh in on decisions makes them feel like they’re part of the process, and it gives them a sense of ownership. Not to mention, it adds a fun, personal touch to your content that can make your followers feel more invested in your journey.

By adding interactive content, you’re not just creating engaging posts, you’re turning your audience into active participants. It’s an easy way to make them feel heard and involved, all while deepening the connection you have with them.

Creating an engaging social media presence isn’t just about showing off your latest work, it’s about making meaningful connections with your audience. By integrating your multifaceted skills, sharing educational content, offering a behind-the-scenes look, and engaging through interactive content, you can build a strong brand identity that resonates with people on a personal level. Remember, your social media is a reflection of you and your journey, so make it real, make it valuable, and above all, make it relatable.

As you move forward with your online presence, remember that your audience is looking for more than just products or services; they’re looking for a connection, a sense of belonging, and a glimpse into your world. Keep it authentic, keep it engaging, and most importantly, have fun with it. By doing so, you’ll not only market your skills but also inspire others along the way.

So go ahead, get creative, share your story, and engage with your audience in a way that builds trust, adds value, and helps you stand out in the crowded digital space. Let your personality shine through, and watch how it transforms your brand’s impact!
